Grovetown was first chartered as Groveton in 1881 by Dr. Joseph Hatton, Ulysses Brooks, John Fisk, Charner McDonald and Charles Clifford. For 33 years, 1916-1949, Grovetown did not have a mayor. The first city mayor, Dr. Joseph Hatton, was elected 1882. The city had four mayors who lived in Williams Street: Leon Davidson, George James, Dennis Trudeau and Maryann Trudeau. Camp Gordon, now known as Fort Gordon, was named after Confederate Lieutenant General John Brown Gordon. The first city fire truck was bought in 1955 and sewer system established in 1988. John Dodge had wintered for 30 years in Grovetown bringing with him horses by train every year. Goodale Park was named after a 20 year old Vietnam War hero killed in the war in 1969, Cpl. Joseph Daniel "Danny" Goodale Jr. When the war started in 1942, Mayor Dennis Trudeau who was born in Minnesota enlisted in the Canadian Army because his family was based in Canada, then served in 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion which was attached to the British Airborne Division, dropped in Normandy on June 6, 1944, captured by the Germans and was a 10 months POW. The Eagle, previously known as Rosalind Hotel, had a roller skating rink on its second floor. The Euchee Creek Library opened in 1994 and the Grovetown Museum was opened in 2000 to the public. The city has 4 council members: Sonny McDowell, Barry Davis, Robert Newman and Bruce Stoddard. The largest monument in Grovetown is the Veterans Memorial Wall. The first postmaster was Charles Clifford on September 28, 1877, who served until he died on 1934 and was acknowledged as the country's oldest postmaster in term.
